The University of Nevada, Reno is a public research university with over 21,000 students. The university is known for its very high research activity, particularly in the fields of civil engineering, earthquake and large-scale structures testing and modeling. It’s also home to one of the most powerful lasers in the country.

　　The university campus is located just north of downtown Reno and many buildings are classically styled. The campus quad is modeled after Thomas Jefferson’s at the University of Virginia. There is also an arboretum and herbarium. The former includes over 60 genera and approximately 200 species of tree.
